The antibody response to a syphilitic infection primarily involves two types of antibodies known as treponemal and nontreponemal antibodies. This distinction is crucial because these antibodies serve different purposes in diagnosing and monitoring syphilis.

Treponemal antibodies specifically target components of the Treponema pallidum bacterium, which causes syphilis. Nontreponemal tests can be used for screening as they are less specific and can yield false positives but are useful for monitoring disease activity and response to treatment.
